Paul M. Gallagher wrote A Perfect Walk to encourage youth and adults to open up about their mental and emotional battles to someone trustworthy, to confide their anguish caused by childhood accidents, injuries, illnesses, etc. If you have emotional and mental issues that debilitate you a little—or a lot—Paul’s story will help you realize you are not alone. We sat down with him today and got to know him a little bit more.
Describe the process of writing a book? How long did it take? What were the biggest hurdles you had to overcome?
The process of writing a book is time-consuming and requires discipline and patience. It took me 8 years to write the book ‘A Perfect Walk’ due to work obligations, exercising and coaching baseball. The biggest hurdles for me were getting approval from those that are mentioned in the book, and again, the time commitment. I suggest to those that aspire to write a book to dedicate one day a week to your goal. For example, Saturday afternoons.
What are your 3 biggest pieces of advice/tips to help people with anxiety/mental health issues?
My 3 biggest pieces of advice to help people with anxiety are to get adequate sleep (often overlooked), to talk to someone that you can confide in (a pastor, a parent, a sibling, a friend, a counselor), and to exercise. Find what you enjoy doing for exercise and stick to it. For me, I enjoy walking, hiking, spinning on a Peloton spin bike and rowing on a Concept 2 Rower. I like to say “Drain the brain!” Exercise is the best drug out there. There is nothing better for the brain!
Who are your biggest influencers/supporters?
My biggest influencers and supporters are family/close friends, the Speak Up Reach Out organization and my church family (The Vail Church).
How would you describe your writing style?
My writing style is honest, easy to read, engaging and informational.
What are your hobbies/interests?
My hobbies and interests include reading, writing, exercising, church participation and sports. I am a sports fanatic! Locally, I like the Colorado Avalanche and the Colorado Rockies. Go Avs and Rox!
Favorite part about living in Eagle County?
My favorite part about living in Eagle County is the laid-back lifestyle and the weather. My favorite seasons are Summer and Fall.
What kind of reaction are you receiving from readers of your book?
The reaction to the book so far has been great! I have been told the book is powerful, honest, helpful, valuable, hopeful, bold. I have had many readers finish the book within a week, some even within 1-2 days!
